She endured obstacles that she overcame to become as successful as she is. One of the biggest obstacles she faced was with body image. “ One of my biggest challenges was definitely comparing myself to others. Unfortunately, we live in a world where anyone’s idea of perfection is easily found via a Google search.  And with that comes self-deprecating thoughts and attitudes.

This took me SO LONG to overcome, but the simplest way I can put how I overcame it was to not think too much. And I noticed that my downward spirals would stem from obsessing over every ounce of food that I put into my mouth. every missed workout, and everyone else that I thought was “perfect”. Through a lot of practice, I have taught myself to relax and let my body do what it naturally knows how to do. It tells me when I’m hungry and when I’m tired–and it rewards me with results. It has all been an evolving process, and I think that trusting my body and relaxing my mind of the forceful thoughts has allowed me to grow on the outside, but more importantly grow on the inside,” Serena says.

Overcoming her own obstacles helps her to guide others in the right directions to taking control of their lives. Check out some of her best tips on how to stay focused, overcome obstacles and achieve your goals!

  • What advice would you give to a young person today who wanted to ditch a sedentary lifestyle and become more fit and healthy?

BABY STEPS. Fitness and active living are not “all-or-nothing”. For so long I lived with that mentality and it NEVER worked. If baby steps means going on a 15 minute walk every day for a month before pushing yourself to make it a 25 minute daily walk, who cares?! There is no timeline, there is not one right way to do it–there are millions of right ways. Never feel like you should do something or should be somewhere on your journey. You are right where you need to be, and your body will tell you when it’s ready for more.

Where should people focus most of their energy to get the most bang for their proverbial buck?

I have always been a strong believer that focusing on working out . And physical activity should be the number 1 focus. I believe that if you can train your mind and body to sweat on a regular basis, all of the other aspects of your health like diet and sleep will eventually follow suit.

  • Think about the 80/20 rule:  If you get 80% of your impact from 20% of what you do.  What is that 20% for someone just starting?

Put  one foot in front of the other. Even if you feel like you have “fallen off the wagon, do NOT start all the way back at square one. ALWAYS pick up where you left off. This will help you get into the mindset of constantly looking forward and never dwelling on what could have been. When you pick up where you left off, even if you’re not quite a the level you were at before, you’re not starting back at square one. You’ve already been to square one and that ship has sailed. Just keep looking ahead at your next (baby) step!
